Just another day

Category : , ,

The big V day around our house is just another day. It is way to close to my birthday to justify going all out a week later. I haven't gotten a flower or a chocolate for Valentine's day in years. And you know what? I just don't care.

I do enjoy getting gifts or candy, and I love flowers. I was a florist for a brief stint. I like the little secret smile I get inside when I see a lovely bouquet. I know that it is silly to spend good money on something that is going to die, so I don't get flowers very often. But you can rest assured that if you see flowers in my house, it is because I purchased them for me. Not because of any romantic gesture on my husbands part!

I did get taken out to lunch on Valentine's day this year, but it was purely coincidental. My husband and I like to go out for lunch on Mondays for a little us time. When we were out and about this Monday, he suggested stopping for a bite to eat. Neither he, nor I remembered it was a "holiday" until the hostess mentioned it to us.

Yep, guess we are big ol' schmoopy romantics.

Roses Are Red...

Husband and I don't do much for Valentine's Day. We're pretty good about doing stuff together when the opportunity is there so I don't feel the need to go all crazy on that day.

I actually forgot what day it was while getting ready for work that morning. We exchanged our usual morning pleasantries (good morning. get out of my way. where's the toothpaste?) and when I got in my car, I saw that he'd put a Valentine's Day card in my front seat. That reminded me.

I tried to not roll my eyes too hard when a girl at work made a huge production of toting in all of the items her boyfriend had had delivered to the main desk at work. This is the same girl who said that she wasn't allowed to work overtime even though she really needs the money because her boyfriend didn't like her being away from him unless it was absolutely necessary because he loves her so much. That poor girl has a hard row to hoe.

On my lunch break, I got him a box of candy (Not the holiday themed stuff. You can get twice as much if you just get a plain box!) but then I ate some of it when I got hungry later. So I stopped at the grocery store on the way home and picked up some little pastries. Some were good. He said some tasted like modeling clay. And I gave him a cute little book.

I look forward to buying lots of candy on sale that is packaged in a heart-shaped box.

Singles unite!

Yesterday was a huge couples day. You know, the one with the chocolate, with the roses, and an almost-law of giving jewelry?

I was single for the first time since I was nineteen years old this year. And I fucking LOVED IT. No card buying, no pretending to like the half-wilted ugly bunch of flowers he picked up at the last second, or faking my way through sex that he believed to be romantic because he *asked* me before shoving his pitiful little dick in my body, no matter my answer.

I only got pissed off once, when an older woman apologized to me for the fact I was single this year. She said it like someone had died, and she was lamenting their passing with me over the coffin.

I just looked at her like the idiot she was; I mean, really? You want to apologize to the chubby, mildly attractive girl because she's single and HAPPY ABOUT IT? When you yourself are married to someone who hasn't been on a first name basis with soap and water in at least a month, and no one likes you? At least people don't avoid me when I walk into a room.

Also, I got to come home, drink a Captain and Coke, and watch whatever the fuck I wanted on television.
